Play World of Warcraft and save money2009-03-10 00:00:00So the Warhammer Online team is facing another round of staff layoffs. It's tempting to file this story under "another victim of the recession", but it's actually nothing of the kind. MMORPGs ought to do better in a recession than during a boom.
They are just about the cheapest form of entertainment there is. For 7.69, I play World of Warcraft for at least 100 hours a month. That's less than 8p an hour.
I literally cannot think of anything else even remotely enjoyable that I can do for that kind of money. It's cheaper than telly*, it's cheaper than reading a book** - heck I probably wear more than 8p/hour of leather from my shoes if I go for a walk***.
Even if you don't already have a computer, it would still be chea...
PlayXpert2009-03-10 00:00:00PlayXpert: The Wild World of Widgets
WarCry continues its series of developer journals from the folks behind PlayXpert, an in-game browser system. The PlayXpert software is highly customizable and the community is invited to create widgets to further its personal feel. Check out the Wild World of Widgets!
We're back to talk about building PlayXpert Widgets. As we explained in the last two articles, PlayXpert provides an open platform allowing developers to build applications (we call Widgets), that can be used in any PC game. This month, we're going to explore the nuts and bolts of developing a widget and illustrate the ease of developing widgets.
Prerequisites
To build a Widget, you should already know how to develop a Windows application or Class Library. You should know what an interface is, and how to implement one.
Anatomy of a Widget
A Widget is essentially a Windows Class Library - a real application, with full access to all .NET services.
There are only two mandatory requirements to be called a Widget:
It must implement the IWidget interface.
The Widget must be licensed with our licensing tool. The licensing process is completely free, and only takes a few seconds.
We have develope...
Please give me something to grind2009-03-10 00:00:00I realized the other night that I have quite possibly the strangest complaint about Wrath of the Lich King possible: There is nothing that you can just go grind if you want to do something mindless. By grind, I mean endless killing of mobs for some minor gain. One of the biggest reasons I play WoW is for social purposes. I play WoW with a lot of my friends, and sometimes when I log on I just want to use the game as glorified IRC while I stab things.
This worked well in The Burning Crusade, because there were a lot of quests that required you to pay attention to what you're doing, but there wer...
Problem Solving With World of Warcraft2009-03-10 00:00:00I don't think there are too many people who would disagree with me if I say Warcraft is mostly about problem solving and achievement. It's not your ordinary game where the goal is to kill everything in sight as fast as you can. You must develop a method of play; you must analyze each scenario and expect that it will take multiple attempts to achieve your desired goal. If you are a person who gets frustrated this is not the type of game for you.
With that said, it's very important that all players utilize and contribute to people who are trying to solve or achieve the same goals. After all, if you have a question or a problem, chances are you are not the only one with the sam...
Profit2009-03-10 00:00:00It is so incredibly simple that idiots can do it. In fact, idiots do do it, and therein lies the problem. We have to do something while leveling to keep our complex hunter brain synapses firing fast don't we? Just what can you do with all the abilities you get at this stage?
Level 10
Obviously the big spell here is Tame Beast, but we're not going to talk about that so much right now because we've already talked about pets so much, everything from choosing and training your pet at early levels, to controlling them, to understanding which pets are the best at level 70. Of course, there's a lot more we can say about pets, but we'll save that for later levels.
But there's one thing that needs to be said again: Get Fizzwidget's Hunter Helper. This addon can help you a ton in finding the best ways to get the latest pet abilities. The latest version has a table you can look at, which lists all the abilities your pet could possibly learn, and which other beasts nearest you can teach them to you. This in itself will make the rest of your hunter-levelling life so much easier that it makes this addon worth its weight in gold... except that it doesn't weigh anything. But you know what I mean.
Anyways, let's mov...
PTR quests show hard-mode progression, Ulduar storyline, Val2009-03-10 00:00:00We've been wondering for a while how exactly the Ulduar storyline plays out in 3.1; this may seem a bit silly or lorelol, given how much time is going to be spent running the instance itself or its myriad of raid bosses and hard modes, but I like to know what's driving me to complete an instance beyond phatty purpz.
You can obviously infer a lot from the instance itself and the names of each respective room, but for those seeking a little more information, Wowhead's PTR page has you covered. There were a few quests added in this most recent PTR build that give us tantalizing bits of Ulduar storyline and show Blizzard's intention to create clear progressions -- not only in the 10- and 25-man versions of Ulduar, but a reward and progression path for those blazing a trail in the hard mode versions of each instance. A fine notion indeed.
Oh, and if you wanted to know just how to forge that new legendary mace...
This writeup will be spoiler-heavy! If you don't wish to know anything about the secrets that lie within Ulduar, don't click the link below. You've been warned.
The questline begins with the Archivum Data Disc, a quest item that drops off of one of the bosses before you enter Ulduar proper (Flame ...
PuG dungeon loot etiquette for dummies2009-03-10 00:00:00So with the dawn of Wrath, a lot of people have been heading into 5-man dungeons, both the normal and heroic type. They may be after experience, they may be after badges, they may be after achievements, but nearly everyone is also very interested in whatever loot may drop along the way.
To add to this, not everyone is so lucky as to have a pre-made 5 man ready to go when they log on for the night. Maybe they're guildless, maybe their guild is off in Naxxramas, maybe their guild is 10 levels below them, but whatever the reason, a lot of people end up looking for the pickup groups to get their dungeon diving done.
Anyhow, you probably know what happens next. Pickup group plus loot equals drama. You'd almost think that's some sort of universal constant in WoW. Sure, we've had some great PuGs, but we've had some bad ones too, and those bad ones seem to come complete with ready-made loot drama, and it seems like we're not alone. We're...
Pure Classes and Raid Difficulty2009-03-10 00:00:00In my ongoing battle to fight bad healers and even worse DPS, I come across this post and it echoes my sentiments exactly with the current problem. Ill bold the part of the statement that really rings true as to the problem I keep running into. Also as another note, I imagine that once Ulduar comes into play it will be hard enough that most groups will cut the fat with their bad players and tell half the rerolls to get back on their healers.
From our POV, hunters, mages, warlocks and rogues are pure classes. All other classes are hybrids. Priests are hybrids because they have a viable dps spec.
The problem for dps essentially comes down to the fact that there are many more dps trees than raid slots available. Healers by contrast are needed in greater proportion as you go from 5-play...
PvE Ruleset2009-03-10 00:00:00When a group of players has engaged Lord Kazzak, any other players interfering in the encounter may be given a warning, regardless of faction, as in the examples below:
A group of Alliance characters has legitimately engaged Lord Kazzak and a Horde character engages Lord Kazzak as well (Horde player receives a warning).
A group of Horde characters has legitimately engaged Lord Kazzak and a Horde character engages Lord Kazzak as well (the second Horde player receives a warning).
PvP Ruleset.
When a group of players has engaged Lord Kazzak, any same-faction players interfering in the encounter may be given a warning as in the examples below.
All other possibilities to join the battle are allowed.
A group of Alliance characters has legitimately engaged Lord Kazzak and Alliance character engages Lord Kazzak as well to disrupt this raid without any PvP solution for the Alliance group (the second Alliance player receives warning).
Here's some more things that will get you banned:
Playing too much," using a rogue/warlock combo to lure bosses too far from their spawn...
PVP News2009-03-10 00:00:00I always end up trying arena a few times and realizing that damn, this is the most unbalanced piece of shit gameplay unless youre playing as the bigger fish class. Wintergrasp as well is on my shit list because its sickeningly easy for an attacking side to just zerg the crap out of one wall section and break through in about 2 minutes.
Maybe giving WG an auto-raid invite system like they have for the BGs would be nice, and buff the HP of the walls considerably. But enough about that, this post is about battlegrounds and arenas.
Arena balance and loss %
Arenas definitely put class balance under a microscope, though I also predict tougher fights in Ulduar may do the same for PvE.
There are a couple of problems with Arenas that I would describe as round peg - square hole. In other words, some players are expecting something different out of Arena than they are getting. Part of this was be...
